RHODE ISLAND PRIDE HONOREES

The Pyramid of Pride is awarded annually to an individual or organization who has made outstanding contributions to our community. They have demonstrated leadership, dedication and the courage of their convictions to improve the quality of life for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered community. This year, RI Pride is pleased to award this distinguished honor to individuals who have been leaders in advocating and supporting the LGBT and HIV/AIDS communities. Rhode Island Pride gives its highest honor, the Pyramid of Pride to Governor Lincoln Chafee and his wife Stephanie Chafee. When setting the agenda of his new term, Governor Chafee declared in his inaugural address that his goal was for Rhode Island to become a marriage equality state and that it did. Governor Chafee’s career is filled with examples of his vocal support for LGBT civil rights issues, which includes his many years as RI’s Republican junior senator in Washington. In June 2009 he wrote in the Huffington Post: “Once you acknowledge that homosexuality exists not by choice, the next obvious step is to grant gays and lesbians the same liberties and freedoms as every other American. As a proud Rhode Islander who thinks of my state as a leader when it comes to treating others with dignity and respect, it troubles me to think we’ve fallen behind in granting our gay and lesbian family members and friends something as fundamentally important as the right to have their relationships fully recognized by the state.” First Lady Stephanie Chafee likewise has been a supporter and ally of the community in word and in deed. Community activist Annie Silvia explains: “She’s been there from the beginning, as a nurse, an advocate for her patients and as a collaborator. She has met with Board members of YPI, has supported LGBTQ and marriage equality and understands the injustices and discrimination that continue to exist against LGTBQ individuals. She will always listen to what you have to say and will help facilitate solutions to problems.” Rhode Island Pride is so honored to recognize these two individuals at this year’s Honors. [pullquote]When setting the agenda of his new term, Governor Chafee declared in his inaugural address that his goal was for Rhode Island to become a marriage equality state and that it did. [/pullquote]

In addition, RI Pride also wishes to recognize an individual whose generous spirit is an example for all to follow. The Spirit of Pride Award is presented to long-time Pride volunteer and former board member Maureen Deloreto. Maureen has been an active member of our community most notably as a volunteer fundraiser for multiple organizations. “Known by many Rhode Island Pride will be celebrating the accomplishments of the members of the LGBT community and their allies at its Rhode Island Pride Honors gala.

as the “Raffle Queen” she has done a lot more than raise money”, states Rodney Davis of RI Pride. “Her quiet strength in sharing her life has raised people to a place of dignity.
