All Out delivers 150K Signatures to Google, To Remove Gay ‘Cure’ Apps From Their Store

google_smNEW YORK —“There is no cure for love, because love is not a disease.”

“Google has a long and impressive track record of advancing equality, but they have yet to remove an app from their store which claims to release people from the ‘bondage of homosexuality’.”

“All Out strongly believes the ‘Setting Captives Free’ app violates Google’s terms of service as written. We have expressed this directly to Google through All Out’s petition, and through conversations with Google employees. While we respect their imperative to protect free speech, we believe this app crosses a line and should be removed like other dangerous apps.” [pullquote]“All Out strongly believes the ‘Setting Captives Free’ app violates Google’s terms of service as written.”[/pullquote]

“So-called gay cures not only don’t work, they are deadly dangerous – and in some cases even illegal. That’s why nearly 150,000 people signed All Out’s petition urging Google to remove this app from their stores. That’s why psychotherapists are speaking out against this app, and that’s why governments around the world are taking steps to ban so called ‘gay cures.’ In New Jersey, Ecuador, California, and Brazil, legislators have said ‘gay cures’ are dangerous to minors and should be illegal. We are grateful Apple responded within 24 hours of All Out launching our petition by removing the app from iTunes, but the world wants Google to follow.”

“All Out has been working around the world to dispel myths that gay people can be cured. Often those who wish to jail gays and lesbians argue sexual orientation is a choice and therefore they should be penalized for making the wrong choice. Google needs to join All Out and Apple by saying no to this false belief. By doing so, Google will help build a more just and equal world.” [pullquote]… nearly 150,000 people signed All Out’s petition urging Google to remove this app from their stores. “All Out is building a world where no person will have to sacrifice their family or freedom, safety or dignity because of who they are or who they love. Google, please join us by banning gay “cure” apps from your store once and for all.”
