WASHINGTON – Last night, the LGBT community was victorious on many political fronts. Although, the Democrats lost control of the House of Representatives, a record number of openly gay candidates were elected into office.

According a recent release by the Victory Fund, an organization dedicated to assisting openly LGBT candidates to win election to local, state and federal offices, 106 of the 164 endorsed LGBT candidates have been elected. David Cicilline now joins Barney Frank, Tammy Baldwin, and Jared Polis as the fourth openly gay member of Congress, come January.

“These victories are important. Out public officials are having a sizable impact on the local, state and national debates about LGBT equality.  Increasing their numbers is a vital part of a long-term strategy to change America’s politics and make our country freer and fairer for everyone,” wrote Chuck Wolfe, Victory Fund President & CEO.
